Naturally, a lot of client work is private and confidential. Here are a few vague but true stories about things I’ve worked on in the past. Of course, work like this doesn’t happen in a vacuum, and so ‘we’ here refers to many team members collaborating with the aim of achieving great results.

We implemented separate a/b tests for specific visual and messaging changes, on the paywall itself and article metering banners. Through multiple test iterations and careful audience targeting, we achieved a triple-digit percentage increase in paywall conversions with one variation and a 15% increase in banner conversions (separate tests).

rollback! rollback!
A leading beauty & fashion blog experienced a rapid 85% drop in traffic during February 2020. In a thorough SEO investigation, we found the cause to be a wildly incorrect usage of disallow directives implemented by a developer who had incorrectly attributed site issues to malicious external links. Upon correction, we restored traffic to previous levels and educated team members on the root cause of the issue.
measure broken stuff too…
In spring of 2021, a real estate site experienced considerable traffic losses and existing agencies were unable to diagnose the issue. After a rigorous review of Google Analytics and SEO signals on the site, we discovered developers had neglected to ensure analytics tags were firing on 404 pages. For a real estate site with frequently expiring listings, the removal of analytics tags on these pages created a significant appearance of disappearing traffic. Understanding your “Page not found” situation is just as important as tracking what’s working on functional pages.
